SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Canton rookie netminder Sirena Alvarez (Jyväskylä, Finland) has been selected the Northeast Women's Hockey League's Goalie of the Week.
The honor is for games contested from Monday, Dec. 30, through Sunday, Jan. 5, and was announced by the NEWHL on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Alvarez was named the Tournament MVP of the Castleton Invitational after stopping 41 of the 42 shots she faced in her first two collegiate wins.
On Saturday, Jan. 4, she totaled 21 saves on 22 shots in a 2-1 non-conference victory vs. NEWHL foe Buffalo State.
The rookie recorded her first collegiate shutout in a 20-save performance as the Roos defeated Northland 2-0 in the championship game on Sunday, Jan. 5.
For the weekend, Alvarez posted a 0.50 goals against average with a .976 save percentage in 119:54 of action.
